It is an austenitic stainless steel with high manganese and low nickel content, a less expensive version of 304 stainless steel, particularly for non-critical use where the highest corrosion resistance is not an overriding requirement.

JT grade varies to a small extent in mechanical characteristics and chemical composition from J4 and is more appropriate for certain deep drawing and cold forming operations. It possesses a superior combination of appearance, formability, and strength, and surface finishes provided are 2B, BA (Bright Annealed), matte, and mirror polish.
