Alloys with an iron base include stainless steels. They must contain at least 10.5% of chromium. Corrosion resistance comes from a thin, invisible adherent chromium-rich oxide film. Alloy 316 is known as a general-purpose austenitic stainless steel. It has a face-centered cubic structure. It just does not become magnetic when it is annealed, and cold working can only harden it. Molybdenum is added to improve corrosion resistance, notably in chloride-rich environments. For Alloy 316, corrosion resistance is improved even further by the reduced carbon content, most especially in welded structures.

Typical uses of Type 316 stainless steel foil are jet engines, exhaust manifolds, furnace parts, valves, and pump trims. Type 316 is a version of Type 316 with extra-low carbon, and it lessens carbide precipitation that is harmful when welding.
